Growing up in the Jordan Downs projects of South Central L.A., I got an early childhood education in the devastation drugs and crime could wreak on kids, teenagers, adults even families. I saw it on the streets, in friends’ houses, in the park, at school, everywhere. In fact I had several relatives responsible for a good third of what happened in my neighborhood.

It wasn’t something that happened in “other” neighborhoods. It didn’t happen on “that” side of town.

It happened in my neighborhood, on my side of town, in my own house.

I didn’t worry about surviving my next test in Mrs. Crabtree’s sixth-grade class.

I worried about surviving.

This was every day life for me, and hundreds of other kids just like me. But somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, fear and devastation I managed to find a small ray of hope, like a flower determined to bloom in the middle of a cracked and dusty sidewalk, I persevered.

And I did so with the help of a man who may not know to this day just how much so small an effort made.

Riding my bike down the streets of the Jordan Downs Projects one twilit evening, my friends and I were accosted by several teenagers who tried to rob us of our bikes. Somehow, some way, we broke free and pedaled like mad for home. On the way my 12-year-old mind filled with one image after another of these boys pursuing me and doing even worse harm. Terrified, I leapt off my bike and ran into the police station I always passed on my way home.

Inside, I met Officer Dan.

So concerned was he with the welfare of a boy he barely knew, Officer Dan insisted on driving me home that first evening. I told him no, that a 12-year-old black boy was safer riding his bike alone in the projects than a white cop would be in his own personal car. We argued, he for my safety, me for his. And then we compromised. He could drive me home as long as we rode in an unmarked car, he covered up his uniform, and dropped me off several blocks on the edge of the outskirts of the projects.

We became fast friends after that and I made it my nearly daily routine to visit him. I’d spend his entire shift there.

Some time later my mother remarried, we moved away and I decided being a police officer was all I’d ever want to be.

Dreams change but memories remain and I’ll always be grateful to Officer Dan.

Now you’re probably not an inner-city kid and I’m no longer an officer, but the point is that officer saw something in me few others did. He saw the potential for success that existed in me and every other human being on this Earth, including you.
