Dear Mark Sumpter,

My business partner and I attended your May boot camp in Atlanta and frankly, you may have saved my life!

My debt has shot up significantly since I left my job last year.  I worked for a lumberyard when we started to experience layoffs due to the huge downturn in new home construction in Columbus, Ohio.  I had worked for the company for almost ten years when I got a call from a co-worker that he was just laid off.  The two of us were the only people doing what we did, selling Andersen windows to builders and remodelers.  He has two children and a wife at home and he is their sole income source.  When I called home to tell my pregnant wife(who is a church organist) what was happening she said that it was clear I needed to quit so that Craig could have his job back.  "We'll figure out what to do" were here words.  You see, I was already planning to leave in about six months to start my full time career in real estate.  (The six month time frame had only been determined the weekend prior to the layoffs).  Armed with my wife's support I went into my boss's office and told him "I quit!"  At the time it was the most satisfying moment of my life.  Total liberation!  But also the scariest; no job, first child on the way, a huge house payment and a bigger payment for a re-hab house that my partner and I took on during the summer of 2006.

Jump forward 6 months.  My daughter is almost 4-months old (now the most satisfying moment of my life), I'm sitting at your boot camp and out of money and my bank calls me to effectively call due a business line of credit.  I have zero money!  My partner and I have borrowed all of the equity out of everything we own trying to keep ourselves a float.  We still own this monstrosity of a rehab house that won't sell, our debt is almost unmanageable and I'm seriously contemplating throwing in the towel and declaring bankruptcy or have you short sale my house!  As I was heading out from the morning session hyperventilating in shock I took the stairs to my 5th floor room and virtually collapsed.  Somehow, someway something told me to pick myself up and get back down stairs.  I managed, more or less in a zombie state, to get downstairs and get back into your meetings.  I moved from front and center to the side wall close to a door.  I took regular notes but honestly I don't recall much until day 2 or 3 when you gave an inspirational speech.  That speech, Mark, was my turning point.  I have my dream board, it’s not on paper yet but it is clear in my mind.  It goes everywhere with me and it is my focus.  I'll share a couple things with you...right in the center is my wife and daughter.  Surrounding them is the rest of my extended family and none of them are struggling with money.  I have a couple toys for myself and my family; a boat and a 2nd home condo on the beach.  I see my children in college and substantial donations to charities of my choice helping inner city youth and families in need.  This is my dream board and Mark it's getting me through some tough times.

Two and half weeks later and where are we now?  When we got to Atlanta we were working two deals.  The phones weren't ringing crazy but when they rang we got the deal (if it was what worked best for the caller).  Since we have been back in Columbus we have got one deed and have appointments for four deeds and we're the "backup plan" for countless other...at least four that I can think of.  The most recent is a 975000 house that we most likely will end up getting the deed for!  Mark, with your information we feel bulletproof.  We are very confident in our ability to work through the loss mitigation process and secure a good purchase price.  We also feel that combining my real estate license and marketing we can unload these deals at reasonable profits.  I know, I KNOW without a doubt we'll be successful.  I have one person to personally thank for that.  You!  I drank the Kool Aid and made the trip to Atlanta and it was just in time.

Where do we go from here?  Well, Platinum.  It's not in the cards this month and frankly it may not be in the cards until August but when I can spend the money without fear of not being able to provide for my family I'll drink the Kool Aid again.  Save a cup for me, please!

Your message about Karma is right on target and something I have always believed.  I try to "do good" by others.  Treat them with respect and kindness.  In the long run I think the good Lord will take care of me and those around me.  Thank you for your time I Atlanta.  Thank you for your sincerity in your quest to better the lives of those around you and to share and teach what you have learned.  I strive to do the same with my life.
